Barbara Knutson

Pottery

Artist Biography

Barbara Knutson was a studio potter in Woodstock, Vt. for 25 years and now calls Florida home.  Although she studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, she is mostly self taught. She is a functional handbuilder with a fluid, gestural and animated style and technique. Her work has appeared in numerous national and regional exhibitions and she has conducted many workshops. Barbara says about herself: "I grew up on a Vermont farm, feeling the freedom to indulge in fantasies evoked by the smell of a mossy spring; the lushness of an udder full of milk. . . the sense of excitement and anticipation as winter changes into spring is one of the spiritual connections I make between my Vermont heritage and the growth and transformation of clay into fire objects. I feel like a farmer. I have put down my roots in the soil of my gardens and in the clay in my studio. I am working to join my physical environment and my spiritual sense of place into a lifestyle that joins purpose and livelihood.

My work is included in the Lark Book Series of 500 Teapots, 500 cups, 500 bowls, 500 pitchers and 500 baskets, as well as Best of Pottery.  I teach soft slab workshops at art centers throughout the East.
