Darryl Jackson

Pottery

Artist Biography

Darryl received a Bachelor of Design in art education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from the University of Florida. While attending UF he experimented with a variety of firing techniques with George Lowe and McKenzie Smith. These techniques included gas reduction, RAKU, electric oxidation, salt (soda) firing and wood firing. The work he produces currently is primarily fired in electric oxidation. It consists mostly of functional pottery, which is finished with decorative foliage imprints. Because of the foliage motif, green is a primary color in his glaze palette.

Another strong influence in his work is simplicity. This element comes from the wood firing experience. When glazing pottery for this, the decorations are minimal. Often a simple brush stroke is all you need because the wood ash melts into a glass and coats the pottery piece with a wide variety of colors and shades of glaze. Using this concept, Darryl has designed a line of pots decorated with a simple brush stroke on a black and white background.
