Artist Statement

I am a multi-disciplinary artist working in mediums that begin with P:  pottery, poetry, piano, and pen-and-ink.  In all of these, I'm most interested in pattern.  In ceramic art, this has led me to work with tile mosaic, and in three-dimensional pieces, to explore surface design and texture.  While I greatly admire elegant form and simplicity in pottery, I am of the "more is more" aesthetic school.  I spent 7 years in exile in the northeast where I found the nature to be far too orderly; trees grew in perfect cones and were spaced too perfectly in even the wildest woods.  I returned to my native Florida, where nature calls me to fill in every possible vacant space with abandon and enthusiasm.  But if I need a break from my obsession with pattern, I return to an old favorite in clay, the pinch pot, also beginning with P.
