Jennifer Bennett

Painting

Artist Statement

I grew up in St. Louis Missouri, so upon moving down south I was instantly overwhelmed by the intensely bright and glorious colors of Florida.  Just like a magpie with its nest of diamonds, I was immediately enamored.  Incorporating my interests in both painting and science, more specifically, the cellular make up of organisms, I create art as a marriage of these two disciplines.  Painting, for me is a way to create order in a shambolic, unsettled world.  Obsessed with multiples, patterns, details, bright colors, and anything that glitters, I refer to my paintings as images of “controlled chaos.” My work represents a close-up, almost microscopic view of the imagery and objects we consume and see on a daily basis in our fast-paced, consumer- driven society, from fashion to processed foods, to the commercialism of Florida’s tourist industry. I am also influenced by the work of artists from a variety of art movements throughout history from Aboriginal to Pop Art.  I enjoy using color, pattern, and glitter to create my own version of eye-candy.
