Joa March and Carmen RoseMixed MediaArtist BiographyJoa March and Carmen Rose are "primitive" or folk artists that have been creating fun and functional works of art in the Gainesville art scene since 1992. Working individually and collaborating, both are colorists and express joy artistically with vibrant color in bright patterns. Each has a unique style that compliments the other almost rhythmically. The whimsical mirror series are hand-built frames dramatically painted that puts the viewer in the center of the fun. Each piece is infused with a spark of humor. "FUN-iture" is what they term the fun and functional furniture that they create. It is made with found pieces of furniture embellished with ceramic tile, wood, upholstery and, of course, paint. Most pieces are accompanied by a clever title. They display their work in the fall at the Downtown Festival and Art Show, as well as the Spring Arts Festival in April each year. Their art can also be seen at other venues such as the Gainesville Artisans' Guild Gallery, local galleries, and the walls of local restaurants.
