Artist Statement: Most of my work consists of bringing the whimsical art of character creation to everyday household utensils, such as mugs and planters, and exploring variations of my characters. I create my pieces in a multi-layered process, which includes building from clay slabs, slip-casting, combining different types of clay, mixing Mason stains in, sanding unglazed areas, applying the finest glazes, and, finally, firing at cone 6.
Artist Biography: Marcelo De Oliveira - DeO, for short - took his first job in the arts at age 19, while studying biology at Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Brazil. His botany and zoology professors had noticed him drawing plants and animals with great accuracy during class and hired him to produce scientific illustrations. Through the following years, while still making pointillist pictures for academic papers, Marcelo found himself exploring other styles of illustration, producing commissioned works as a caricaturist and developing a passion for cartoon, especially character creation. In 2006 he moved to Tuscany, Italy, and his new interests led him to further pursue works as a cartoonist. Throughout the years, he has also experimented with other artistic media, such as constructions with wood and plexiglass.
In 2016, during a trip back to Italy, Marcelo and his family unexpectedly found themselves in a rural community of pottery enthusiasts. Through handbuilding with natural clay from a river bank and open-firing the pieces throughout the night, Marcelo was introduced to the art of ceramics in one of it's most rustic and elemental forms. He came back home and marveled at what endless possibilities this medium could allow him to create. As Marcelo masters some of the several complexities of the ceramics, he becomes ever more fascinated with the medium and better able to manifest his passion for character creation in the form of functional and durable household objects.
