Artist's Biography: Mark and his bride of 37 years, Maureen, arrived in Gainesville upon his retirement . Mark was an attorney in Jersey City, New Jersey working in the public's interest.
Throughout his career Mark had occasion to work with those patients involuntarily committed civilly to county and state treatment facilities. During tours of the various hospitals, he observed that many of the patients, even the most challenging, became focused and responded well during art therapy sessions.
Upon inquiry and research, Mark discovered "Art Brut" ("Outsider Art") and its relationship to mental health, and overall well-being. Mark's work has been shown in various NJ shows, including Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Hoboken and Jersey City. Mark finds the Outsider process therapeutic, freeing, and amusing for himself and viewers. "Don't just hang art. Hang a conversation."
Outsider Art defies description because to define is to diminish. It exists beyond conventional mainstream art institutions, styles, schools and trends.
Traditional standards of color, size, perspective and beauty are set aside. Visceral images flow unfiltered from brain to surface. Themes or thoughts obvious to the artist, may be more than obscure to the viewer who will take from the piece whatever is brought to the piece.
Outsider art affords freedom to drift, imagine and daydream to everyone who may drift into its gravitational pull.
No rules. No reasons. Raw. Self-taught. Spontaneous. Unsophisticated. Primitive.
